Congressman Greg Gianforte Is Shredding Healthcare

Touch to Shred

Congressman Gianforte doesn't want to talk about his dangerous healthcare bill:

Congressman Gianforte does not understand the needs of Montana families. His out-of-touch agenda will threaten Montanans’ access to healthcare.

  • Congressman Gianforte supports the so-called Graham-Cassidy healthcare bill, which would:
    • Allow insurers to charge an “age tax” on older Americans, resulting in annual premium increases of up to $17,197 for Montanans over the age of 60 [AARP].
    • “Gut protections for people with pre-existing conditions.” [CBPP].
    • “Jeopardize many lives that are covered today,” according to Montana Hospital Association President Dick Brown [Billings Gazette].
  • He voted against a funding bill that included critical Alzheimer’s and cancer research, resources for rural Community Health Centers, programs to battle opioid and drug addictions, and nursing training programs [H.R. 6157, Vote #405, 9/26/2018].

Last year Gianforte praised the American Health Care Act (“Trumpcare”) behind closed doors with his donors and lobbyists.

  • “But on the same day, during a private conference call with Republican-leaning lobbyists in Washington, Mr. Gianforte offered a more supportive view of the health bill. Making the case for the “national significance” of the Montana election on May 25, Mr. Gianforte said: “The votes in the House are going to determine whether we get tax reform done, sounds like we just passed a health care thing, which I’m thankful for, sounds like we’re starting to repeal and replace” [New York Times, 5/5/2017].

Congressman Greg Gianforte doesn’t particularly care that Montanans have invested in Social Security and Medicare their whole lives. In fact, he’s said seniors, “have an obligation to work.” His votes in Congress jeopardize seniors’ investments and threaten the long-term viability for today’s seniors, baby boomers, and young people.

Congressman Gianforte’s record could not be more devastating for seniors:

  • Gianforte, knowing that threats to Social Security and Medicare were already mounting, voted for a record $1.9 trillion increase in the national debt, a massive tax giveaway to millionaires like himself, creating the largest debt in history. He then voted for another tax giveaway that add an additional $3.8 trillion to the $1.9 trillion deficit [Washington Post, 9/13/2018].
  • Gianforte Voted For FY 2018 House Republican Budget Resolution. House Budget “Reprises A Controversial Plan To Turn Medicare Into A Voucher-Like Program.” “The 2018 House GOP budget reprises a controversial plan to turn Medicare into a voucher-like program for future retirees ....” [Associated Press, 10/5/17]
montana Public Lands At Risk

Public Lands

Congressman Greg Gianforte simply doesn’t understand the importance of Montana’s public lands to our outdoor heritage and recreation economy.

  • After he moved to Montana, he sued the state to block public fishing access at the East Gallatin River. In 2009, Congressman Gianforte sued the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks to eliminate a one-acre easement providing access to the East Gallatin River near Cherry River Fishing access north of downtown Bozeman [Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 6/5/2009; Case Number: DV-09-502C, Gallatin County District Court].
  • When he got to Congress, he voted the gut the Antiquities Act, used by Republican and Democratic presidents since Theodore Roosevelt to protect public lands as national monuments including the Upper Missouri River Breaks [AP, 10/11/2017].
  • He proposed legislation, with no public input, that would eliminate protection for over 700,000 acres of public lands with in wilderness study areas. His proposal is deeply unpopular with Montanans [Missoulian, 5/10/2018].
  • Siding with an extreme fringe of the House, he voted against a funding bill to avert another government shutdown. The shutdown would have included our National Parks and further delayed critical maintenance of campgrounds, roads, and land management [AP, 9/28/2018].

Choice

A woman’s healthcare decisions should be between herself, her doctor, and her faith. Congressman Gianforte wants to add government to that list.

Congressman Gianforte is trying to take away the freedom for women to make their own healthcare decisions. On this issue, he is far too extreme for Montana. His out-of-touch agenda is threatening women’s lives.

  • Gianforte went out of his way to co-sponsor legislation that would outlaw most forms of birth control and ban abortion access with no exceptions for rape, incest or the health of the mother [H.R. 681].
  • Gianforte Voted Against Covering Contraceptives For TRICARE Beneficiaries. In June 2018, Gianforte voted against a motion agree to contraception coverage parity under the TRICARE Program. [HR 5515, Vote #300, 6/27/18]
  • Gianforte Voted For A 20-Week Abortion Ban Imposing Criminal Penalties On Doctors, With Exceptions For Rape And Incest Only If It Had Been Reported To Law Enforcement. [HR 36, Vote #549, 10/3/17]
